Thank you!

To all parents who contributed food and time for the class party today,

Your generosity, efforts and presence really made a difference!

Have a blessed Chinese New Year!

CNY Homework!

Homework?!

Ahem! Yes Boys, I know you will be happily enjoying yourselves feasting and collecting hongbaos, but please do the following:

1. Read the AMODES Reading Passage to your mummy/daddy once a day.
2. Monitor and record the growth of your bean plant in your Eureka Science book.
3. Collect a small leaf and place it between 2 heavy books. You need a dried leaf to make a bookmark next Thursday during Terrific Thursday.

Lastly, take good care of yourselves and see you back in school next Tuesday! On behalf of the subject teachers, I would like to wish you and your family a happy and blessed Chinese New Year!

Cheers,
Mrs Tan

CNY Celebration

Dear Parents,

Kindly note that the boys are strongly encouraged to wear their Chinese traditional costume on Thursday, 30 January. In the event they do not have one, they may come to school dressed in their PE attire. However, they are NOT to come dressed in their red tees, especially those printed with cartoon characters. Your kind understanding is much appreciated!

On behalf of the subject teachers and boys, I would like to extend my thanks and appreciation to all parents who would be contributing food and their time on the eve of CNY! Thank you very much indeed! We do look forward to meeting you on that day and savouring all the yummy goodies!

Here's wishing you and your family...

Revision: Subject-Verb Agreement

Dear Parents,

Kindly note that the boys have learnt the above this week. In the past weeks, they learnt that a sentence consists of a subject (which is usually a noun/pronoun) and a verb (also known as a predicate). Now, they should be able to state that:

1. a singular noun requires a singular verb

2. a plural noun requires a plural verb

Below are the links to some videos the boys can watch to recapitulate what they have learnt:

1. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAUKYp6PnII

2. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfjQ7FeNbuA
*There is a spelling error in the video.

3. http://www.turtlediary.com/grade-3-games/ela-games/verb-subject-agreement.html
*referred to as Verb-Subject Agreement

Thank you for your attention!

Revision: Singular & Plural Nouns

Dear Parents,

Kindly note that the boys have learnt the above this week. They should be able to change a singular noun into its plural form by:

1. adding 's' to the singular noun
2. adding 'es' to the singular noun
3. replacing 'y' with 'i' and adding 's' to the singular noun
4. replacing 'f' with 'v' and adding 's' to the singular noun

Below are the links to some videos the boys can watch at their leisure:

I am back!

Dear Parents,

Many of you must have heaved a sigh of relief and thought that I had disappeared from the scene!
Well...
I am back!
Today I returned the EL file to the boys. Kindly take a look at the Learning Sheets for Unit 1, especially LS 1.10. Please feel free to contact me if you have any queries pertaining to that worksheet. Kindly sign on the cover page and remind your child to submit the file tomorrow.

I have received some feedback regarding the Eureka Science assignment. I understand some of the boys are having trouble with it because the seeds simply refuse to grow! In the event new seeds need to be bought and grown, please go ahead and do it (and throw the old, stubborn ones into a pot and cook green bean soup!)!

The deadline for the submission of the book is 7 February. If your child is unable to adhere to the deadline due to the above valid reason, he may submit the book after he has completed the assignment. The main objective of the assignment is to give the boys an opportunity to observe and record the growth of a seed. Hence, the process of carrying out the experiment is important. I would really appreciate all parents' assistance in ensuring that the experiment is carried out at home. Adhering to the deadline is important but ultimately achieving the objective of the assignment takes priority. Still, I do look forward to collecting the boys' books on that day and hearing them share about their experiences.

So...

Thank you and have a blessed day ahead!

Script for Speech & Drama Performance

Write Right!

Dear Parents,

The boys have embarked on their Write Right writing journey!
In Term 1, the boys will learn how to:
1. plan their story
2. write interesting opening sentences to set the scene and hold audience's attention
3. write good endings to conclude their story

For Writing Practice 1, the boys wrote their story using the story plan and the guiding questions attached to each picture as a guide. Many of the boys were able to narrate their story in a chronological order. However, most of them need to pay more attention to SPG: Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar.

As publishing is an important part of the writing process, the boys are required to write their story (again) on the worksheet given to them today. Kindly help to remind the boys that it is important to produce an error-free publication so that readers can enjoy reading it. I also hope you can give your child an opportunity to read his story aloud to you and your family. Kindly give him your comments and words of encouragement too! Your active participation would inspire your child to want to write more and well!

Thank you and enjoy your child’s story!

AMODES 1

A note of appreciation

Dear Parents,

On behalf of all the teachers of 2 Goodness, I wish to express my thanks and appreciation to you for your continual support and participation in accompanying and assisting your child on his learning journey!

We would like to seek your understanding that due to our school, family and personal commitments, we are unable to update each and every individual parent personally on a daily basis.

To facilitate your child's learning effectively, kindly check your child's Homework File/Diary/School bag and the class blog for notifications and updates. If there is a need for any teacher to contact any parent individually, she will either call or email the parent directly. Please feel free to contact the subject teachers directly too.

Final updates for Week 1

Dear Parents,

Hooray, we have come to the end of Week 1! I hope the week has been good for you and that you find the class blog useful!

Today, the boys did two comprehension exercises:

(A)  Comprehension MCQ (Learning Sheet 1.9)
The passage was an information text about earthworms:

Earthworms are very helpful to farmers. They dig tunnels through the soil by gobbling up whatever is in front of them whether it is dirt or dead plants and animals. The remains of these materials are cast out at the other end of their body. Dirty and unimportant litter are digested in an earthworm’s body and come out as useful soil. Earthworms are the best soil makers on the planet. Without them, farmers would have a much harder time growing healthy vegetables and fruits.

The boys learnt that:

1. The first sentence is usually the topic sentence which gives an idea what the passage/paragraph is about.

2. The last sentence usually reinforces the topic sentence, providing a summary of the passage/paragraph.

(B) Comprehension Open-ended (Learning Sheet 1.10)
The passage was a narrative text about two good friends.

The boys learnt:
1. how to dissect each question in order to answer it

Qn: Where did the bear attack the two travellers?

·                Where = place = (preposition + article) noun

·                did = verb must be written in its Past Tense form
*If the verb occurs after ‘to’ or a modal (eg. must), it should be written in its root form.

·                subject of the answer/sentence = the bear

·                object of the answer/sentence = the two travellers

Ans: The bear attacked the two travellers in a valley.
(subject - verb - object - additional information)

2. underline keywords in the passage to be used to answer the question

The boys are expected to take notes while I am teaching. Most of them were able to do so today. Due to time constraints, we completed only two questions. Next week, I will do the other three questions with the boys. After the exercise has been marked, I will return the booklets to them to take home for your perusal.

This year, I will also be teaching the boys Parts of Speech. I hope that by the end of the year, they would be able to identify words as Nouns or Prepositions or Adjectives, etc. This skill would be useful to them when they have to tackle Comprehension Cloze in Primary Three.

That is all from me for the time being! I believe I have caused you enough stress!

Well, don’t be stressed! Please feel free to contact me if you have any queries, feedback or suggestions.

Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your co-operation, especially in ensuring that your child completes and submits his homework on time! Er…some boys did not do Page 38 of the Grammar Workbook yesterday…hmmm...

Anyhow, have a blessed weekend!

(C) Today you have learnt about Prepositions. Here are some notes on Prepositions:

-Prepositions take their name from the Latin meaning 'placed in front of'.
-They explain how nouns relate to other parts of a sentence.
-They always come before a noun in a sentence.
-They help a Verb to pin down where whatever happens, happens.

Important:
1. Do not use a preposition when you do not need one!
eg. Where is it? (NOT Where is it at?)

2. Mother gave the sweets to Steve and me. (NOT Steve and I)

(D) Below are the links to the video clips on Prepositions:

You may watch them at your own free time! Enjoy!

Cheers,
Mrs Tan
